Treat automation authority as a business decision
Reading an inbox, drafting a reply and issuing a refund are different authority levels. Start with the minimum permissions needed and expand only after the workflow has been tested and failure modes are understood.
- Read-only where possible
- Separate draft from send
- Limit destructive actions
- Review permissions

Put human review where error cost is high
Microsoft notes that delegating work to AI does not transfer accountability. Customer commitments, prices, payments, legal wording and sensitive account changes generally need stronger human ownership.
Test exceptions, not only happy paths
Test missing fields, duplicates, unusual language, timeouts and unavailable downstream systems. When confidence is low, a safe fallback may be to stop and queue the item for review instead of inventing a result.
- Missing inputs
- Duplicate events
- Timeouts
- Low-confidence output
Log decisions and make rollback possible
For important workflows, retain enough information to understand the trigger, key action, timestamp and approval state without collecting unnecessary sensitive data. Prefer reversible changes when practical.

Appropriate safeguards depend on sensitivity and reversibility. This framework is intentionally conservative rather than claiming one control model fits every business.
